Experimental
Hypnotic
Melodic
Noise
Rhythmic
Heady
These are just some of the ways a Stream of Consciousness performance has been explained. “It is hard to put us in a category, but I always refer to us as ‘Avant-Garde’” says founding member and electronic trombonist Justin McAdara. “We look at making music that is experimental and engaging. We are influenced by many different genres including jazz, art rock, hip-hop, and even electronic music. We look to create what we call ‘Sound Sculpture’ where the music has height, depth, and tactility. We want you to taste the music.”
Stream of Consciousness started as an idea between three graduate students to bring experimental and improvised music to a wider audience. “There has been a stigma with improvised music that it is elite and inaccessible. We wanted to break down those barriers” explains David Fletcher, acoustic trombonist. “Each performance has a bit of structure that we start with, but each one is different and unique. We feel that each performance is a special gift for the listener that cannot be replicated again. This lets the audience know they are witnessing something unique to their ears for the first time.”
With instruments as diverse as electric trombone, sampling boards, water bowls, and acoustic trombone, Stream of Consciousness is like no other group you have heard. Categories don’t do the band justice by trying to explain what you will hear. It is not jazz, rock, electronica, or even purely noise music. Stream of Consciousness is head music. We are third-eye music, and we can’t wait to offer this special gift of Sound Sculpture to you.
